A Burden Gardens Engagement Session | Baton Rouge Engagement Photos

Burden Gardens is, hands down, one of my favorite places to shoot in the entire Baton Rouge area — and for engagement sessions specifically, it might be my favorite spot of all. There's a reason so many couples planning Baton Rouge engagement photos end up here: few locations in the city offer this much natural variety, texture, and quiet romance in one place.

This session is a perfect example of why. This sweet couple absolutely lit up among the crepe myrtles, oak trees, and seasonal florals scattered throughout the gardens, and as their Baton Rouge engagement photographer, I couldn't have asked for better light or a better backdrop for their story.

Why Burden Gardens Is a Favorite for Engagement Photos

Officially known as the LSU AgCenter Burden Gardens (part of the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden), this sprawling property gives couples something rare in one single session: several completely different backdrops without ever leaving the property.

We spent time in Windrush Gardens, Steele Burden's twenty-five-acre masterwork, where towering live oaks and ancient crape myrtles form a natural, dappled canopy overhead — it's easily one of the most romantic, timeless backdrops available anywhere near Baton Rouge. From there, we moved through the Rose Garden, with its soft, romantic color and texture, and the Steele Burden Memorial Orangerie Garden, which offers a more polished, seasonal backdrop depending on what's in bloom.

That range is exactly why Burden Gardens works so well for engagement photography. A couple can get warm, dappled, oak-canopy portraits and bright, floral, garden-party portraits in the very same session, all within a short walk of each other.

A Note on Timing and Light

Like most gardens in this area, Burden Gardens changes dramatically with the seasons — crape myrtles in vivid bloom in the summer heat, softer and quieter in the cooler months, azaleas and camellias adding color earlier in spring. If you're planning a session here, it's worth talking through timing with your photographer, since the look and feel of your gallery will shift quite a bit depending on the month you shoot.

A Wedding to Look Forward To

I loved this session so much that I could hardly wait for what came next — photographing this same couple's wedding not long after. Sessions like this one are exactly why I love what I do as a Baton Rouge wedding photographer: getting to know a couple during their engagement session first means that by the time their wedding day arrives, we already have a rhythm together, and it shows in the photos.

Planning Your Own Engagement Session at Burden Gardens

If you're newly engaged and searching for a Baton Rouge engagement photographer who already knows this property well, I'd love to talk through a session with you. Burden Gardens rewards a little planning — knowing which gardens are blooming, where the light falls best at different times of day, and how to move through the property efficiently — and that's exactly the kind of local knowledge I bring to every session I shoot here.
