It must be baby season! I can count on two hands the number of questions I’ve received recently regarding Newborn Sessions! Naturally, a blog post is due. For those expecting, or those related to those expecting… Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your little bundle of joy! As for the rest of you, well, just bookmark this info for later. :)
The Newborn Session: Is It Really Necessary?
Well, no, of course it’s not “necessary”. Neither is cookie dough ice cream, but you won’t convince me it’s not necessary when I get that craving! But really…hear me out while I explain why the answer is really a resounding “Yes!”
Newborn photoshoots are a wonderful way to freeze time, and capture the fleeting moments of your baby's early days. These pictures will become a treasure trove of memories that you can share with your child as they grow older. Whether it's their tiny fingers and toes, their adorable little yawns, or their toothless grins, each photo tells a unique story of your baby's journey into the world.
Okay, I’m convinced.
When should I hire a newborn photographer?
If you’ve entered your 2nd trimester, it's time to start thinking about booking a newborn photographer!
When it comes to Newborn Photography, timing is everything. Remember, those first few weeks after your baby is born are a whirlwind of emotions and sleepless nights (sorry!). To ensure you secure a spot with your preferred photographer, it's recommended to book well in advance. Most professional photographers have limited availability due to the demand for newborn sessions. By scheduling ahead, you can secure a spot during that ideal timeframe and ensure that you don't miss out on capturing those precious early moments.
But here's the thing: timing doesn't stop at the booking stage. The age of your newborn when you have the photoshoot also matters!
The “Perfect” Age for a Newborn Session
The general consensus is that the best age for newborn photos is within the first two weeks of life. At this stage, babies are still in that sleepy, curled-up state and are more likely to cooperate during the session, leading to those adorable, heart-melting shots. However, every baby is different. Some babies may need a little more time to settle into their new world, while others may be ready for their close-up as soon as they arrive. It's important to consider your baby's individual temperament and schedule the photoshoot accordingly.
Navigating the Unknowns
If your baby is born prematurely or requires a longer stay at the hospital, it's best to consult with your photographer and healthcare provider about the ideal time for the photoshoot. They can provide guidance based on your baby's unique circumstances, ensuring that the photoshoot is safe and comfortable for your little one.
Remember, the goal of the photoshoot is to capture your baby in their most natural and relaxed state. So, whether it's within the first two weeks or a bit later, trust your instincts and choose a time when your baby is content, well-rested, and ready to shine.
What if My Baby Just Won’t Cooperate?
This is a worry that’s best left to the photographer! We have strategies and tricks to help baby fall asleep, stay comfy and cozy. Additional feedings may be required throughout the Session to soothe your baby back to sleep - this is fully expected!
Including Family Members in Photos
Family is an integral part of a baby's life, and including them in the photoshoot can add an extra layer of love and connection. Consider capturing moments of your baby with their parents, siblings, or even grandparents. If you have older children, involving them in the photoshoot can create beautiful and heartwarming images. Capture the joy and wonder on their faces as they interact with their new sibling. Whether it's a gentle kiss on the forehead or a tender cuddle, these photos will become treasured mementos of the special bond between siblings. These photos will not only showcase the bond between family members but also provide your baby with cherished memories of their loved ones.
You might even consider including the family pet in your Newborn Session!
General Tips for Preparing for a Newborn Photoshoot
Plan ahead: Schedule your photoshoot during your pregnancy to ensure availability and avoid disappointment. Discuss your vision, preferences, and any specific shots you would like to capture with the photographer.
Feed and soothe your baby: Before the photoshoot, make sure your baby is well-fed and comfortably settled. A full tummy and a calm baby will make it easier to capture those peaceful and sleepy poses.
Keep it cozy: Bring a few extra blankets, wraps, or swaddles to keep your baby comfortable and warm during the photoshoot. Soft textures and gentle fabrics can enhance the overall look and feel of the images.
Keep it simple: Focus on the baby and their unique features. Minimal props and distractions will allow the true essence of your baby to shine through.
Be patient: Newborn photoshoots can take time, so be prepared to spend a few hours at the studio. Babies may need breaks for feeding, changing diapers, or simply to settle down. Patience is key to capturing those picture-perfect moments.
Newborn photoshoots are a wonderful way to capture the fleeting moments of your baby's early days. By choosing the right time, preparing for the photoshoot, and embracing creativity, you can ensure that these pictures become cherished memories for years to come. So, go ahead and schedule that photoshoot to capture the pure innocence and beauty of your little one. Trust me, you won't regret it!
