Why I’m Bringing Film Back to Baton Rouge Weddings
In a world of instant previews and digital perfection, there is something deeply soulful about waiting. As a photographer, my goal has always been to capture the authentic, unscripted emotion of your day. While digital photography is unmatched for its precision and speed, analog film captures a certain "magic" that a sensor simply cannot replicate.
Here is why I’ve decided to integrate film into the Sarah Shaw Photography experience:
The Raw Beauty of Imperfection
Digital photos are made of pixels; film is made of silver and light. There is a tactile grain and a soft, organic "glow" to film that makes a wedding gallery feel like a collection of memories rather than just a set of files. It’s not about perfection—it’s about feeling.
A Slower, More Intentional Pace
When I pick up my film camera, everything changes. I’m not "spraying and praying." I’m looking for the perfect light, the genuine laugh, and the quiet sigh. Because each roll only has a few shots, I am forced to be more present with you, ensuring that every click of the shutter truly counts.
Colors That Last a Lifetime
There’s a reason high-end editorial magazines still prefer film. The way it handles skin tones and natural light (especially during those humid, golden Louisiana sunsets) is timeless. When you look at your album twenty years from now, these images won't look "dated" by a digital filter—they will look exactly as the day felt.
My Curated Film Kit
To ensure your photos have that classic editorial look, I rely on a few specific film stocks known for their reliability and beauty:
For the Perfect Glow: I use Kodak Portra 400 for almost every outdoor session. It is famous for its warm, creamy skin tones and its ability to handle the bright Louisiana sun without losing detail.
For Timeless Black & Whites: Nothing beats Ilford HP5 Plus 400. It has a beautiful, moody contrast that makes indoor ceremony shots and reception dances look like scenes from a classic movie.
For Vibrant Garden Details: If we are at a lush venue like the Houmas House or a local botanical garden, Fujifilm 400 brings out the vibrant greens and deep colors of the landscape perfectly.
